Why Visit Cala Mesquida Beach in Mallorca!
1. Cala Mesquida Beach
Cala Mesquida is an excellent destination if you want to explore the more natural and undeveloped side of Mallorca. It is a small town directly on the northeast Mediterranean coast and is within the boundaries of the large regional parc, “Parc Natural de la Peninsula de Llevant”. There are several beautiful sand beaches nearby with crystal clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The surrounding park forests are mostly made up of pine trees with trails leading in every direction and ideal for hiking. This is a less crowded part of the island and is great for relaxing and just taking it easy.
2. Top Things to Do at Cala Mesquida Beach
In the village of Cala Mesquida, you have the namesake beach which is made up of soft white sand and aqua blue waters. The beach is about 300 long and about 60m wide, providing lots of room to spread out and relax. The beach has a relatively gentle slope making it a great place for families with children.
During the summer, the waters are great for windsurfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking, the equipment being available for rent directly on the beach. The beach is just a short walk from local accommodations, restaurants, and cafes, and directly on the beach, you will find various amenities such as a restaurant, a snack bar, washrooms, and lifeguards.
From Cala Mesquida, there are trails heading in all directions throughout the park. These trails are ideal for hiking whether you’re an experienced hiker or just a beginner. The trails will lead you through sand dunes, and pine forests, along the coastline, and past several old ruins ranging from medieval to prehistoric structures.
Make sure to pack a towel and swimsuit for your hikes because there are a few other beaches along the way. In fact, only a km west of Cala Mesquida are Cala Mitjana and Cala Torta, both of which are white sand beaches with a nice little beach bar and washrooms. These beaches are a little more out of the way but definitely worth the walk.
If you are a little more motivated, you can head southeast across the peninsula and follow one of the main trails leading directly to Cala Agulla roughly 2.5km away. The beach is right next to the town of Cala Ratjada. Both the beach and the town are worth exploring.

Tip: When hiking the trails make sure to wear a good pair of shoes as some of the trails do cross some rocky terrain. Also, make sure to bring some water and sunscreen. During the summer, it can get hot so you want to protect yourself from sunburn and prevent dehydration.

3. Dining Options Near Cala Mesquida Beach
Cala Mesquida is a small location with only a small selection of eating establishments to choose from. For more selection and variety you may want to head to Cala Ratjada or Capdepera where you will find more restaurants, cafes, and bistros. If you’re looking for seafood, my recommendation is Cala Ratjada. With a harbor right in town, there is fresh fish brought in daily by local fishermen, and many restaurants offering seafood specials daily.
While in Mallorca you should make a point of trying out some of the following Mallorcan specialties which you should be able to find in most places:
- Ensaimada: Ensaimada is a circular pastry made from flour, water, sugar, eggs, and lard. It is baked until golden and often dusted with powdered sugar before serving. (My personal favorite and a hit with the kids.)
- Sobrassada: Sobrassada is a cured sausage made from ground pork, paprika, salt, and spices. It is typically spread on bread or used in various cooked dishes.
- Tumbet: Tumbet is a traditional dish consisting of sliced potatoes, eggplant, and red bell peppers. The vegetables are fried and layered, then topped with a tomato sauce before being baked.

4. Where to Stay Near Cala Mesquida Beach
There are several hotels in Cala Mesquida to choose from so finding accommodations should not be an issue, provided you book well in advance of your trip. In addition to this, there are plenty of accommodations in Capdepera and Ratjada, ranging from luxury hotels to youth hostels and everything in between. In fact, during our recent day trip to Mesquida Beach, we stayed overnight in Can Picafort, only 30km away, so the number of options is quite large.
To help you plan your next visit and to determine availability and price for the right accommodations, I’ve included a link below to assist. (For full disclosure, this is an affiliate link. You can look as much as you want for free, and if you find that perfect spot and decide to book through this link, then I will make a small commission. Don’t worry though, you won’t be paying a higher price because of the commission and it does help me to cover my costs).

5. Best Time to Visit
The best time of year to travel to here depends on what you are planning on doing. If you are planning a beach vacation, then the summer is definitely the best time of year to come: hot sunny weather, days that seem to go forever, Mediterranean sea breezes, and warm nights. This is Mallorca at its best. That being said it is also the busiest time of year for travel so you will definitely find it more crowded. But if you don’t mind getting up close and personal with your neighbors then perfect!
My preference is to travel in the off-season, May/June or September/October. The weather is still exceptionally warm but there are far fewer people. Travel and accommodation costs are usually lower as well, so that’s a bonus if you are traveling on a budget. Also, a bonus is that restaurants, bars, tours, excursions, and other activities are less crowded and the pace is far less hectic, making for a far more enjoyable and relaxed experience.
If you are looking for full-on solitude then you can always come during the winter months from November to March. The weather is still nice (compared to northern Europe) and there are definitely fewer people, but you will find that many (but not all) places are closed for the winter. You won’t find beach weather however for many activities like cycling, hiking, and golfing, this may be exactly the conditions you are looking for.

6. How to Get to Cala Mesquida Beach
Cala Mesquida is located on the northeast coast of the island and is about 70km from the airport. If you rent a car at the airport, you can take the Ma-15 highway heading east and follow the signs to Capdepera. Once in Capdepera, turn off of the Ma-15 onto the Cala Mesquida road and follow it north about 4km. The entire trip will take about 75 minutes. As part of your trip planning, when booking accommodations, be sure to ask about the parking situation, as parking during the high season will be at a premium.
You can also reach Cala Mesquida using the island bus system. The bus company is called TIB (or Transports de les Iles Balears) and services most major towns and tourist sites on the island, and this includes Capdepera. From Capdepera you can then reach Cala Mesquida by taxi. For information on bus routes and schedules, you can follow the above link.

7. Tips for Visiting Cala Mesquida Beach
Two of the main tips for visiting Cala Mesquida, especially during the high season, are to wear plenty of sunscreen and drink lots of water. The next big piece of advice is to make sure you pack a good pair of walking shoes. The area is made for walking and hiking, with dozens of trails to choose from. A good pair of walking shoes will be your best friend. For some beach activities, you will be able to rent equipment (for example, kayaks or paddleboards), but you may want to bring your own snorkeling gear which can be easily packed. The waters are clear and ideal for snorkeling for all ages.

As a courtesy, make sure to dispose of all garbage in the bins located on the beach. When hiking, make sure to not disturb the wildlife (this is their home after all) and when crossing the dunes, stay on the marked trails as these are protected areas and will help preserve the dune ecosystems for years to come for future visitors.
