DISCOVER THE BEACHES AND COVES AT SON VERI NOU

After wrapping up a 2-week trip to Mallorca, we booked one final night in a budget hotel in S’Arenal. This is located at the south end of Palma de Mallorca. After a long day of driving, I decided to go for a jog to unwind and relax. I decided to not head to the crowded beach promenade. Instead, I headed in the opposite direction for some peace and quiet. The route I stumbled upon for my jog was so relaxing and peaceful that I retraced my steps later. This time walking and with my camera. I found this route so nice that I decided to write a post specifically for this area and share the photos that I took.

Quiet Route

The path I followed transitioned within less than a few hundred meters, from the busy and touristy district of S’Arenal into the quiet hidden village of Son Veri Nou. The route was a simple out-and-back run keeping the coast to my right on the way out and retracing my steps on the way back. After going past the S’Arenal Marina and climbing up an overly wide concrete staircase, I made my way through an upscale residential area with beautiful homes and landscaped gardens. Along the way through this neighborhood, I found a few unmarked stone staircases. These led down to small hidden beaches and coves, with crystal clear waters surrounded by pine trees and a rocky shoreline.

After a few hundred meters the path led out of the residential area and continued directly along the coastline. Here you were met with unobstructed panoramic views of the Mediterranean, with sailboats anchored off the coast and the city of Palma far off in the distance.

Eventually, the path led into another residential area with a few more stone staircases leading to more hidden coves.

Sunset

Although it was early evening, there were still many people either lying on the sand or sitting along the rocks, catching the last rays before sunset. The whole scene stood in stark contrast to the extremely busy atmosphere at the main Playa de Palma beach. These small hidden beaches provided a quiet relaxing refuge from the chaos and hectic atmosphere only a kilometer away.  At Cala Fort, I turned back and retraced my steps back to the hotel, essentially covering the route twice in a row before calling it a day.

Recommendation

Would I recommend someone travel all the way to Mallorca to visit these hidden beaches? Probably not. But if someone was already going to be in the area, then yes, definitely.  So, if you find yourself in S’Arenal and are looking for a little escape from the crowded beaches and the stream of never-ending tourists, head south past the marina and make your way to Son Veri Nou to experience a quieter side of Mallorca.

BEST TIME TO VISIT AND TRAVEL TIPS

The peak tourist season on the island is during July and August when most regions of Northern Europe have their school breaks. With everybody heading to the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands at the same time, it does get busy so be prepared, plan ahead, and book accommodations, rental cars, plane tickets, and tours well in advance.

Tip: If you are looking for a less hectic experience, you might want to consider traveling in May/June or in Sept/October. The weather is still exceptionally nice and you can escape the large crowds. In fact, we just visited the beach towards the end of September and the temperature was 28C making for an excellent beach day.
