WHAT IS THERE TO DISCOVER IN CALA AGULLA BEACH MALLORCA?
Exploring Cala Agulla’s Natural Beauty
Cala Agulla Beach, located on the northeast coast of Mallorca, is a perfect beach destination. It has soft golden sand, crystal clear azure waters, and a shallow sandy bottom that stretches into the sea.
The beach sits within the park limits of the Llevant Peninsula Natural Park and so has escaped commercial and residential development on its shores, maintaining its original natural state, surrounded by pine forests, sand dunes, and rolling hills in the distance.
The excellent underwater visibility in Cala Agulla makes it perfect for snorkeling and the calm waters make it great for paddle boarding, kayaking, and swimming. The region is great for hiking with park trails leading into the hills from where you can get some great panoramic views of the whole area.

The beach is well-equipped with amenities like sunbeds, umbrellas, and nearby cafes, making it a convenient location for visitors. The beach is also monitored by lifeguards during the busy tourist season. With the town being nearby, you are just a 2-minute walk from beach stores, grocery stores, and restaurants. The waters are crystal clear and the beach has a slight grade making it safe and a great place for kids and families. You can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and paddleboats from vendors directly on the beach. It’s a short walk from town and there is ample parking at the beach (daily rate of about €6).

All in all, a very nice beach location with plenty of activities to do including my favorite, just lying in the sun and doing nothing.

Explore Other Beaches in the Area
If you are feeling adventurous, and want to explore other beaches in the area, then you’re in luck. Within a short walking distance of 2.5 km from Cala Agulla is Cala Mesquida. There is a well-marked trail that takes you up into the hills overlooking the coast and leads you to Cala Mesquida on the other side where you will find another beautiful beach. There is a small town here with stores and restaurants and there are amenities at the beach as well.

If you are looking for a more remote and secluded beach off of the beaten path, then continue on past Cala Mesquida and follow the coastal trail another 1km to Cala Torta, Cala Mitjana, and Cala Estreta. There are no amenities so make sure to bring water and food with you if you plan on visiting these beaches.

- Restaurant Los Olivos – Known for its Mediterranean cuisine and fresh seafood dishes.

These spots provide a mix of local and international flavors to enjoy during your visit. Mallorca has a large variety of locally produced wines so make sure to try some of the local wines with your meals.
You may also want to consider a wine tour and visit some of the local vineyards. Bodega Conde de Suyrot is located in nearby Arta and offers guided tours and wine tastings, and provides a deep dive into the local wine culture.
Traditional Mallorca Dishes
When in the area, make sure to try the following traditional Mallorcan dishes:
- Ensaimada: Ensaimada is a circular pastry made from flour, water, sugar, eggs, and lard. It is baked until golden and often dusted with powdered sugar before serving.
- Sobrassada: Sobrassada is a cured sausage made from ground pork, paprika, salt, and spices. It is typically spread on bread or used in various cooked dishes.
- Tumbet: Tumbet is a traditional dish consisting of sliced potatoes, eggplant, and red bell peppers. The vegetables are fried and layered, then topped with a tomato sauce before being baked.

Safety Tip: Warning – Sun May be Hot (Who Knew?)
The main tip here is to make sure to use suntan lotion. With the breeze off of the Mediterranean, it’s easy to forget that the sun is quite strong here. Go for a waterproof lotion and apply it frequently. This also includes most activities you plan on doing whether sightseeing, cycling, jogging, paddleboarding or just sitting in a cafe having a coffee.
Day Trip Suggestions
Visit Palma: Old Town/Royal Palace/The Cathedral
You can take a day trip to Palma and explore the city’s old town. It features narrow streets and historic buildings such as the Almudaina Palace (the official royal residence on Mallorca of the Spanish royal family), the Cathedral (right near the palace), and the Arab Baths. There are tons of cafes, shops, and markets to visit making it a great relaxing outing.

Visit Capdepera
Capdepera is only about 2km from Cala Agulla and is home to one of the oldest medieval castles in the region. The castle is open to visitors daily from 10 am to 6 pm with admission around €4 per person (discounts also available for children and seniors). The castle tower offers excellent views of the island and the Mediterranean. You can also explore the town, stroll through its small winding streets and visit one of the local cafes.

Visit Arta
Located just a few kilometers away, Arta is definitely worth a visit. The Sanctuary on top of the hill provides an excellent view over the town and surrounding hills. This old town is mainly untouched by tourism and offers an authentic Mallorcan experience.

Peak Tourist Season
The peak tourist season on the island is during July and August when most regions of Northern Europe have their school breaks. With everybody heading to the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands at the same time, it does get busy so be prepared, plan ahead, and book accommodations, rental cars, plane tickets, and tours well in advance.
Tip: If you are looking for a less hectic experience, you might want to consider traveling in May/June or in Sept/October. The weather is still exceptionally nice and you can escape the large crowds. In fact, we just visited the beach towards the end of September and the temperature was 28C making for an excellent beach day.
Transportation options
- Flying: Cala Agula is about 65 km northeast of Palma Airport which serves both domestic and International flights.
- Transport on Mallorca: Taxis can be found all over the island, car rentals are also available and there is also the public transport company TIP (or Transports de les Iles Balears), which operates a network of bus routes that services major towns, cities and popular tourist destinations across the island.
Accommodations
Accommodations are available in Cala Agulla and Cala Ratjada. The tourist infrastructure in the area is well developed so there is no shortage of accommodations in the area. These range from luxurious beachfront resorts to budget-friendly youth hostels and guesthouses. Check out the link above for places available right now.
Book in Advance
I mentioned it above but it bears repeating, make sure to book well in advance, especially if you are planning to come during July and August. This basically goes for everything. Your best bet is to check online for available accommodations, car rentals, flights, restaurants, activities, and equipment and book as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.
