WHAT ARE THE BEST TIPS FOR RUNNING IN THE HEAT?

As an experienced runner, with 40-plus years of road running (with a few marathons thrown in for good measure), I’ve had my share of runs in the heat and strongly advise you to take these tips to heart. ⁤⁤Running in the heat of summer, especially along the Mediterranean sea, can present some challenges, but if you’re careful, it can be a safe and enjoyable experience. ⁤⁤Here are ten safety tips for joggers to prevent heat-related problems: ⁤

TIPS:

  • ⁤Stay Hydrated: Drink lots of water throughout the day, not just before or after your run. ⁤⁤You might want to also carry a water bottle while you run. ⁤
  • ⁤Wear the right clothes: choose lightweight, breathable, and light-colored clothing. ⁤⁤Lighter colors will help reflect the sun and keep you cool. ⁤
  • ⁤Apply Sunscreen: Wear a waterproof sunscreen with 30 or higher SPF to protect your skin. ⁤
  • ⁤Avoid the hottest part of the day: This one falls in the common sense part of the tips. ⁤⁤Try running in the morning or in the evening when it’s cooler and the sun is not so intense. ⁤
  • ⁤Get used to the heat: Give your body some time to get used to the higher temperatures before you start going for longer runs. ⁤
  • ⁤Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, which include dizziness, headache, nausea, and excessive sweating. ⁤⁤If you experience these symptoms, stop running, find shade, and drink water. ⁤
  • ⁤Run in Shaded Areas: Where possible, run where there is more shade and less sun. ⁤⁤This ties into the “run early or later” tip when the sun will be casting longer shadows. ⁤⁤You’d be surprised how little shade there is at Noon! ⁤
  • ⁤Stay Informed: Check the weather forecast and heat advisories before heading out. ⁤
  • ⁤Cool Down Properly: After your run, take time to cool down with gentle stretching, and if possible, lower your body temperature with a cool shower or by resting in a cool environment. ⁤⁤With hot runs, I usually reward myself with a “post run” dip in the sea. ⁤
  • ⁤Stay Connected: If you can, run with a cell phone in case of an emergency (take a few minutes to load up local emergency numbers just in case). ⁤⁤Also, if possible, run with a friend or let someone know where you are running and when you plan on coming back. ⁤

⁤By following these safety tips, you can better protect yourself against the risks related to running in high temperatures. ⁤⁤This will help ensure a healthier and more enjoyable running experience during your Mediterranean summer holiday. ⁤
