INTRODUCTION: PLAYA DE MURO MALLORCA

I recently went on a trip to Mallorca, Spain, with my sons and we spent a week at Playa de Muro. Mallorca is one of the Iberian Islands in the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Spain. We’ve been to many vacation places in Mallorca but in terms of beaches, we were all agreed that Playa de Muro Mallorca was one of the best beaches on the island. This is an ideal place to go for a family friendly vacation. Crystal clear shallow waters, a beautiful sand beach that seems to go forever, and a wide selection of fun activities to do for the whole family.

As someone who has lived on the Mediterranean for over a decade, I’m happy to share my inside tips and knowledge to help you make the most of your travels.

WHY IS PLAYA DE MURO MALLORCA THE BEST FAMILY FRIENDLY BEACH ON THE ISLAND?

1-The Beach is Large

Let’s start with the obvious: Playa de Muro Mallorca is Big. At 6km it’s a very long beach with white sand and crystal clear waters. With such a long and wide beach directly on the Mediterranean, there is room for everyone.  You can easily find a place on the sand for yourself without feeling crowded.

2-Water Quality

The crystal clear water quality is pristine, helping to earn the beach the coveted Blue Flag award.

3-Shallow

It’s shallow (you’ll have to go out quite a ways before it gets deep enough to swim) making it relatively safe for kids and ideal for the elderly and anybody who just wants to cool off in the water. As an added bonus, the shallow water discourages motor boats or jet skis from coming too close to shore (After all, nothing says summer relaxation like the sound of a lawn mower blowing in your ear at the beach).

4-Safety

There are lifeguards stationed at various locations along its shore. In normal conditions, there are no hazards such as undertows or tides on this part of the Mediterranean Sea. During windy, wavy, or stormy conditions, flags are flown along the shores to inform swimmers of the conditions and if it’s safe to swim or not.

5-Public Facilities

There are public washrooms located at several points along the beach. Additionally, there are wheelchair and handicap access points, ample parking, and boardwalks along certain sections of the shore.

6-Beachtown

Part of what gives Playa de Muro its charm is Muro,  the small town along its shores. It is a true beach town with all the shops, restaurants, and beach bars that one would expect in a beach town.

7-Family Friendly

With such a wide and long beach there was a lot of room and finding a place for the clan to run, play, and swim (without disturbing our “beach neighbors” ) was never a problem. With a few strategic purchases at the beach shops in Muro (swim goggles, beach shovel, and inflatable dinghy) it was easy to keep the boys busy for hours.

For mid-day snacks, there were lots of chip stands, crepe wagons, and ice cream vendors to keep the troops fed. Stress levels for dad were kept to a minimum and the kids were able to play themselves out every day. Most accommodations in Muro are within walking distance to the beach so logistical concerns were kept down to a minimum. If this isn’t family friendly then I don’t know what is.

I spent a week at Playa de Muro Mallorca and spent most of the time just relaxing on the sand and sleeping (which basically took care of my vacation “to-do” list). Am I judging this beach to be one of the best beaches in Mallorca because I had a fantastic vacation or did I have a fantastic vacation because I was at one of the best beaches in Mallorca? Who can say? For this trip, however, and I’m sure that the kids will agree, Playa de Muro Beach rules!

10 BEST THINGS TO DO AT PLAYA DE MURO MALLORCA

1-Hiking to the top of the “Puig de Sant Marti”

This was a nice easy hike for the family. We started near the bottom of the hill on the south side and walked up a dirt road that led to a radar installation. We made our way through a jungle-like forest that covered the entire west side of the hill. The walk was relatively easy and not too strenuous for the boys (9 and 12).

We were rewarded at the top with a spectacular view of the entire Muro Beach and the nearby town. For the return hike, we just walked straight down the east side of the hill which resembled a desert-like landscape. Near the bottom, we walked through a herd of grazing goats and made it to the main road in record time (total time 1 hour)

2-Visit The Beach

This was the high point of the trip to Spain for me and the boys but for different reasons. I was able to lay in the sun, relax, and do nothing (which pretty well took care of my “to-do” list). The boys, on the other hand, were able to swim for hours in the Mediterranean Sea, exploring the water under the dock which was teeming with small fish and some octopuses (Tip: At one of the local beach shops I picked up some cheap snorkeling gear and a dinghy which guaranteed hours of fun. At the end of the trip, we gifted the dinghy and the gear to a family who were just starting their vacation. Pass it on!)

3-Watersports

In addition to the “lay on the beach and do nothing” activity I mentioned above, there are all kinds of rental shops where you can rent windsurfers and kite surfers for when the wind conditions are right (which unfortunately they weren’t for the whole time we were in Spain). We were however able to get some stand-up paddle boarding in which is always a great option for windless days.

4-Running

This one is more for me. I went running every day through all of the dirt trails in the area including up to the radar tower. The trails also connected with small dirt roads that were off the main grid so there was no traffic and few distractions, ideal for long runs. I love running in the heat so this was perfect for me. (Tip: try to get out in the mornings if you can as it does get quite hot later in the day).

5-Go-Karts

There was a go-kart track located near the hotel so we made it down there at least once. As mentioned above, the days were quite hot so this was a good activity for the evening. It wasn’t overly expensive and the boys were able to drive a few laps before we went out for dinner.

6-Boat Tours

I mentioned the dock earlier which turned out to be the starting point for several boat tours out on the Mediterranean Sea. There were different trip options from half an hour to a couple of hours depending on the tour operator, and tours began at different times throughout the day. This was a lot of fun, relatively cheap, and gave us a chance to see the coast from out at sea. As an added bonus our boat went right up close to a rock cave.

7-Visit “Alcudia Old Town”

Visit the street markets in nearby Alcudia Old Town (You can reach the town by bus or taxi). Walk along the cobblestone streets and visit the old town square. You can check out the local shops and stores where you can buy a wide assortment of sunglasses, swimwear, clothes, souvenirs, and inflatable swim toys.

8-Dining Out

For evening meals, there was no shortage of restaurants in the area serving up local Spanish dishes and various seafood platters. Just keep in mind though that they do get quite busy at peak hours. (Mid-day lunch, on the other hand, consisted mostly of french fries or crepes which were both readily available at or near the beach. These may not have been the healthiest choice but the kids and I agreed that it was “Delish!”).

9-Cycle Along The Coast

Spain is a bike-friendly country and this holds true for Mallorca as well. There are different places where you can rent bicycles at a reasonable price (look for family rates where available, and day or week rates as well). You can then take bike rides along the coast, always a good bet with the kids and you can expand your range quite a bit further than by walking.

10-Birdwatching in S’Albufera Nature Reserve

Next to Muro Beach is a protected wetland that is home to various species of birds. Here you can spot flamingos, herons, and other migratory birds. This is probably more interesting for younger kids and definitely worth checking out. Had there been crocodiles in the water, I would have had an easier time getting my boys to buy in.

FINAL THOUGHTS – PLAYA DE MURO MALLORCA

That was it. We spent a week at Playa de Muro in Mallorca, Spain, the weather was super hot and most days were spent on the beach with a few excursions thrown in here and there. Not a club med vacation but that wasn’t the objective of this trip. We did a bit of sightseeing, lots of swimming in the Mediterranean Sea and lots of walking. The beach itself was beautiful, the local town was nice and there was a continuous buzz of activity without it being overwhelming.

We experienced this trip to Spain through the eyes of a family. However, there were lots of vacationers, young and old, with no kids who seemed to be having a great time as well. I can’t speak to the nightlife but I’m sure there were a lot of entertainment options and things to do judging on the amount of beach bars and clubs in the area. Still, the area is by no means an out-of-control party hub and is a great place to go with the kids for a family vacation. One day, I’ll have to go back to this piece of paradise on the Mediterranean Sea, and revisit the area when I have grand kids, and write a follow-up post.
