THE BEST TRAVEL DAYPACK STYLES
THE BEST TRAVEL DAYPACK STYLES

INTRODUCTION
If you’re planning a trip overseas to Europe, Australia, or Asia, in fact anywhere you plan on doing some sightseeing, a portable travel daypack is a must. A travel accessory that is easily overlooked until you really need it. What is the best travel daypack? There are many to choose from and the one you want will definitely depend on where you are going, what you plan on doing, your budget, and your personal preferences.
For this article, we will assume that you are planning to explore the streets of a European city, visit a beach for the afternoon, or do some local sightseeing.

WHAT ARE THE BEST TRAVEL DAYPACK STYLES?

Packable Daypack
If you are not familiar with this style of backpack, it is the ideal travel solution. This daypack is highly compact when folded up for travel and takes up virtually no room in your suitcase. When unpacked, it offers enough space to carry a bottle of water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and most small items you may want to carry around “just in case.”
This travel pack is the ideal companion for your short walking trips around town, providing essential functionality without being a burden (try walking through the Champs-Elysée with a suitcase). On Amazon, this style of pack is available from $8 and up. I bought one several years ago for $5, and it has traveled with me to Europe, Australia, and the Caribbean on multiple trips. Although this workhorse is slowly showing its age, it still gets the job done. If you are indecisive about packing an extra bag for your trip, this small “pouch” will definitely win you over.
Pros
- Budget-friendly
Compact
lightweight
Cons
- thin shoulder straps
fewer outside compartments
thin material

The Classic Backpack
Compared to the packables, these packs tend to be more robust and slightly larger, making them ideal for longer outings and small hikes on park trails. They typically start at a slightly higher price point than the packables, ranging from a budget-conscious $25 to $50 and up. The shoulder straps are usually wider and padded, with additional outside compartments. With this type, you should be able to comfortably pack most of your trail essentials, including water, lunch, and an extra sweater.
While these packs may not be ideal for trekking the Alps, they are perfect for smaller outings such as walking around downtown, going to the beach, or strolling through the park. The downside is that they will take up more space in your luggage since they are not as compact as packables.
Pros
- Budget-friendly
Robust
thicker shoulder pack
Cons
- not compact
- not as durable
- limited features

The Classic Leather Pack
These bags are not as compact as packables and will take up more room in your luggage if you are planning an overseas trip. However, what they lack in versatility and portability, they make up for in style and appearance. If you aim to stroll through the streets of Rome and make a fashion statement, then this is the perfect bag for you. Available in various sizes, models, and prices to suit every budget, it can hold all your accessories and more, making your city strolls enjoyable and stylish.
Pros
- stylish
- durability
- sophistication
- ages well
Cons
- more expensive
- weight
- limited color options
- less breathable

Mini Daypack
This range here is similar to packables, offering most of the same advantages except for the compact carry size. However, in terms of affordability and function, these backpacks are worth considering for your next trip.
Pros
- budget-friendly
- portability
- robust
- comfort/thicker shoulder straps
Cons
- smaller form versus normal daypacks
- fewer side compartments
- less comfortable for extended use
- not good for large items

Waterproof Daypack
I’ve included this type for those who will be traveling to places where the chances of bad weather are high. Whether it’s England in the fall, Northern Germany in the winter, or Ireland in the spring, a waterproof daypack is worth considering.
Various models are available that offer waterproof storage at an affordable price and in a wide range of styles. However, they may take up more space in your luggage as they are not as compact as some other types. The decision to choose this style will depend on the planned activity, destination, and time of year.
Pros
- waterproof
- robust
- relatively budget friendly
- versatile, can be used for multiple activities
Cons
- not compact
- can be a little more expensive
- increased weight due to the material
- potential for condensation inside the pack
- limited breathability
FINAL THOUGHTS
There are many different types of travel daypacks available on the market. Depending on your preferences, planned activities, or the destination you intend to visit, you will find a style and model that suits you. My personal favorite is the leather backpack for its style and timelessness. However, when it comes to versatility and compactness, packables are the best option for basic sightseeing and shorter outings where function and portability are the top priorities. By packing one of these in your suitcase on your next trip, you are sure to make your next outing more enjoyable and relaxing.
