From the lively city of Alicante to the surrounding serene coastal villages, the Costa Blanca offers something special for every traveler. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or a sun worshiper, you’ll fall in love with this corner of Spain.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ALICANTE COSTA BLANCA?
The Costa Blanca is a coastal region of Spain starting near Denia in the north and stretching down to Pilar de la Horadada in the south. The main city of this region is Alicante which is also home to the regions largest airport. Millions of visitors come to this area yearly to visit its beaches, towns and various attractions. The tourist infrastructure is well developed in Costa Blanca, including the road and rail network, making the entire area easily accessible and a popular choice for travelers from all over the world. The following are just a few suggestions of some of the things you can do in Alicante.
Explore the City
The city of Alicante is an old city and a real joy to explore. As you wander through the old streets, you’ll be transported back in time. The city’s cobblestone lanes are lined with colorful buildings and shops, creating a picturesque setting. There are several parks in the downtown area that are surrounded by cafes and restaurants. These provide a great opportunity to escape the heat and simply relax.
Esplanada Espana
Alicante is port city with a large marina and harbor along the city’s seashore and you can see that the city has gone to great lengths to ensure that these are incorporated into the city landscape in an inviting and beautiful way. There is no better example for this then in the Esplanada Espana. This promenade/park stretches about half a kilometer parallel to the harbor front and is lined with hundreds of Palm trees. The walkway is made up of a mozaic pattern that creates an illusion that the surface is curved. In fact it is perfectly flat. Along this promenade you’ll find several merchants selling all kinds of souvenirs, clothes, wallets, bags, etc…. And if you’re hungry or thirsty there are dozens of restaurants and cafes the entire length of the promenade.

Visit The Citadel
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the impressive citadel that overlooks the city. This ancient fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surrounding areas. Immerse yourself in history as you explore the well-preserved ruins and learn about the city’s fascinating past. There are several walkways that meander their way along the side of the hill to eventually take you to the top.
For an easier way to the top, there is an elevator set up at the bottom of the hill. For a small fee this will save you the walk. However way you get to the top, you wont be disappointed as there are incredible views and lots to see. And of course there is a cafe and restaurant at the top in case you get hungry.

The Seawall – Passeig Volado
For a nice walk, go to the seawall and walk along the Passeig Volado. This walkway sits about 2 stories in height, giving you a great view of the Mediterranean, the Alicante Beach, the Castell de Santa Barbara and the harbor. There is an elevator for easy access for the elderly and handicapped. When I’m in the city, I make sure to include the seawall as part of my route.

Beaches
No visit to Alicante would be complete without spending time at its beautiful beaches. The city has an excellent beach only steps away from its downtown area immediately at the end of the Esplanada Espana. During the Spring, Summer and Fall, this 600m long beach is busy with tourists and locals, catching some rays on the Mediterranean shore. Here you’ll find a series of beach bars, showers, washrooms and enough space to lay your towel and relax.
Whenever I stay in Alicante, I try and find accommodations downtown so that I can get some beach time in during my visit. After a day of sight seeing, its well worth a visit to the beach and maybe even get a tropical cocktail at one of the many beach bars. With miles of sandy shores lapped by crystal-clear waters, it’s no wonder why this coastal paradise attracts sun-seekers from all over the world.
About 7km north east of the city is San Juan Playa which is a wide sand beach that is about 6km long. It’s ideal for those looking for more space on the beach and access to water activities like windsurfing or kayaking. Whether you’re looking to relax under an umbrella or try your hand at water sports, there’s something for everyone along the city’s scenic coastline.

Shopping
For those who love shopping and discovering local treasures, a visit to one of Alicante’s street markets is a must. Here, you can browse through stalls filled with fresh produce, handmade crafts, clothing, and much more. It’s an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture while finding unique souvenirs to take home.
When summer arrives in the Costa Blanca, the city truly comes alive. The warm Mediterranean sea creates the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities and festivities. From lively music festivals to vibrant street parties, there is always something happening in this dynamic city during the summer months.
As night falls in the city, get ready to experience its vibrant nightlife scene. The city offers a wide range of bars, clubs, and restaurants where you can dance the night away, sample delicious tapas, or simply relax with a refreshing drink while enjoying the lively atmosphere. If you are an expat you might want to consider heading to the Red Corner sports bar. They have an English menu, English beer and of course non stop football on the big screen TV. Alternatively, if you are a Canadian, you may want to make your way to the main train station (hear me out on this one!) where you’ll find an honest to goodness Tim Horton’s. (If your Canadian, you’ll understand! 🙂 )

Best Time to Visit and Travel Tips
Peak Tourist Season
The peak tourist season in Costa Blanca is during July and August when most regions of Northern Europe have their school breaks. With tens of millions of visitors heading to the Mediterranean coast at the same time, it does get busy so be prepared, plan ahead, and book accommodations, rental cars, plane tickets, and tours well in advance.
Tip: If you are looking for a less hectic experience, you might want to consider traveling in May/June or in Sept/October. The weather is still exceptionally nice on the Mediterranean Sea and you can escape the large crowds.
