Explore Cabo de Gata

Cabo de Gata is a beautiful coastal area with expansive beaches and volcanic landscapes located in the Costa Almeria region of Spain. The park is directly on the Mediterranean with a coastline of roughly 50km and offers a wide selection of trails for hiking, paths for cycling, and spots for bird watching. Visitors can explore several historical sites such as fortresses and old settlements. The waters are exceptional for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, with an abundance of marine life visible below the surface.

Keep in mind that the park is fairly large with several access points and roads to choose from. In some cases, some of the roads are only seasonal with restricted access. We found out the hard way that we could not drive from San Jose to the salt flats at Las Salinas de Cabo de Gata, as the road was reserved for bus access only. We ended up having to drive about 30km all the way around the park to reach the salt flats, something we hadn’t planned on. Not a big issue, but something to think of when planning your activities.

Stunning Beaches

Cabo de Gata’s beaches are excellent for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring coastal waters. Visitors can enjoy activities like snorkeling and beachcombing, experiencing the natural coastal environment.

  • Playa de los Muertos
This beach has been rated as one of the top beaches in Spain and Europe. Known for its crystal-clear waters and striking white pebbles, this beach is great for sunbathers and excellent for snorkeling. The beach’s secluded location requires a short hike along a rocky “goat trail” down a hillside (part of the magic) so access is limited but worth the effort. We put together a post on Playa de los Muertos to find out more.

The shallow waters are perfect for families and those looking to enjoy a relaxing swim. Note: During the summer check with the park directly on road access and bus schedules.
  • Cala de Enmedio
This beach is accessible only by foot or boat. Surrounded by cliffs and lush greenery, Cala de Enmedio is perfect for solitude and natural beauty and the calm, turquoise waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
  • Cala San Pedro
A remote and idyllic beach that you can reach by foot or boat ride. The clear waters are perfect for snorkeling.
  • Playa de los Genoveses
This beach is wide with soft sand and gentle waves, making it perfect for families and water sports. The surrounding dunes and lush vegetation create a beautiful setting for picnics and sunbathing. During the summer check with the park directly on road access and bus schedules.
Side Note: Don’t do like we did! We were exploring San Jose and found ourselves following a dirt road out of town into the park area. Somehow we had bypassed a park control gate and found ourselves unceremoniously turned back.

Volcanic Landscapes

Cabo de Gata’s volcanic landscapes consist of hills and rock formations, shaped by ancient eruptions into the present striking terrain we see today. The contrast of volcanic rock against the Mediterranean creates an incredible scene. As a significant volcanic region in Europe, the park’s topography offers insight into the earth’s history, drawing geology enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Best Time to Visit and Travel Tips

Peak Tourist Season

The peak tourist season in Cabo de Gata and the Costa Almeria is during July and August when most regions of Northern Europe have their school breaks. With everybody heading to the Mediterranean coast at the same time, it does get busy so be prepared, plan ahead, and book accommodations, rental cars, plane tickets, and tours well in advance.

Tip: If you are looking for a less hectic experience, you might want to consider traveling in May/June or in Sept/October. The weather is still exceptionally nice and you can escape the large crowds.
