(To find out more about this region see our related guides, “Mallorca“, “Menorca“, “Discover the Balearic Islands“, “Coast of Spain“, and our guide to The Mediterranean Coast )
Some of the Top Attractions
Here are some of the top attractions to see in Ibiza. And yes, there is more to Ibiza than just beaches and dance clubs!
Dalt Vila
Dalt Vila is an incredible walled city that’s been around since ancient times, and it’s so well-preserved it’s actually a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s on a hilltop (be ready for stairs) from which you will have incredible views of the town. While visiting this site, make sure to also check out the Ibiza Cathedral which has an interesting mix of architectural styles.

Tip: Try visiting early morning or in the evening to avoid the midday heat.
Es Vedra
Es Vedrà which is a massive rock island just off the west coast. There are all kinds of myths and legends surrounding this island. Some people say it’s the third most magnetic spot on Earth after the North Pole and the Bermuda Triangle (Spoiler Alert: After doing some fact-checking, it turns out that this “magnetic spot” story is definitely part of the folklore). Magnetic field or not, watching the sunset behind Es Vedrà is an experience you’ll never forget.

Punta Arabi Hippy Market
One of my favorite experiences in Ibiza was visiting the Punta Arabí Hippy Market. It’s this crazy, colorful explosion of sights, sounds, and smells. You can find everything from handmade jewelry to tie-dye shirts to local art. Just watch out for the pushy vendors – I learned to politely but firmly say “no gracias” about a hundred times that day.
Tip: Rent a car if you can. Public transport on the island can be a bit hit or miss, and there are so many hidden coves and secluded beaches that you can only reach by car. Just, uh, be prepared for some interesting driving experiences on those winding mountain roads.
Discover Ibiza Beaches

Ok, let’s get down to business: the beaches of Ibiza! I’m a beach bum at heart and I’ve had my fair share of sandy adventures on Spanish beaches but the beaches on the Balearic Islands are some of my favorites.
Will break this up into 2 parts. First, we’ll list some of the beaches on Ibiza itself (the main island) and then we will turn to the beaches on Formentera.
Ibiza Beaches
Playa d’en Bossa
Playa d’en Bossa is located directly in the town of Ibiza and is one of the longest stretches of sand on the island. The water here is so clear, you can see your toes wiggling in the sand even when you’re chest-deep. It has tons of amenities, beach bars, cafes, and rental shops. Just be prepared for crowds in peak season. One time, I showed up at noon in August and could barely find a spot to lay my towel. Lesson learned: get there early if you want some elbow room.

Playa de Talamanca
If you’re traveling with kids (or just prefer a more relaxed scene), Talamanca Beach is a good choice. The water here is shallow for quite a ways out, which is great for little ones or nervous swimmers. Talamanca’s got all the amenities you could want – showers, restaurants, beach bars.
Cala Salada
Cala Salada is a bit of a hidden gem but it is definitely worth the effort to find. The first time I went, I almost gave up because the road got so narrow. But trust me, keep going! When you finally catch a glimpse of that pristine sand and crystal-clear water, you’ll forget all about the tricky drive.
Formentera Beaches
The beaches on Formentera are next level. We hadn’t planned on coming out to Formentera on our first trip but we caught a ferry over for a day trip. I’ve never quite recovered from that experience. After spending time on the Formentera beaches, it’s hard to return to “regular” beaches afterward. Here is my list of the top 5 beaches on Formentera (though quite frankly they are all equally awesome). I’ll keep my comments short and let the pics do the talking on this one:

- Playa de Ses Illetes – Known for its stunning white sands and clear waters.
- Platja de Migjorn – Offers a long stretch of beach with a relaxed vibe.
- Platja Es Arenals – Popular for its beautiful scenery and family-friendly atmosphere.
- Calo Des Mort – A small, picturesque cove perfect for a quiet escape.
- Platja de Llevant – Known for its natural beauty and tranquil setting.
Be warned, however! If after visiting these beaches, you decide to sell all your worldly belongings and choose to live out your life on Formentera, that’s on you!

TIP: if you’re visiting in peak season (July-August), consider checking out some of the less famous beaches. They might not have all the amenities, but you’ll have a much easier time finding a spot to call your own for the day.
NightLife
Alright, let’s cover Ibiza’s legendary nightlife scene! This is one of the things that Ibiza has been famous for, for decades now. There are tons of dance venues but the main ones are:

- Ushuaïa Ibiza – Known for its open-air parties and world-class DJs.
- Hï Ibiza – Offers a futuristic clubbing experience with cutting-edge sound and visuals.
- Amnesia – Famous for its epic parties and legendary foam nights.
- Pacha Ibiza – Iconic for its glamorous vibe and diverse music genres.
- Privilege Ibiza – The world’s largest nightclub, known for its massive parties.
- DC10 – A favorite for techno lovers, offering an underground vibe.
- Eden – Renowned for its state-of-the-art sound system and vibrant atmosphere.
- Es Paradis – Known for its beautiful interior and water parties.
- Space Ibiza – A legendary club with a rich history in the Ibiza nightlife scene.
- Plastik Ibiza – Offers a more intimate clubbing experience with a lively atmosphere.
Keep in Mind:
The clubs are open late. Like really late. Like first thing in the morning late.
Book tickets online in advance as these dance clubs sell out.
The chances of running into celebrities are pretty good so don’t stare!
Tip: Consider hitting up some of the smaller, lesser-known clubs too. They might not have the big names, but the vibe can be just as awesome, and your wallet will definitely thank you. Plus, you might discover the next big DJ before they blow up!
Cultural and Historical Sites
Alright, now to the cultural and historical side of Ibiza! I have to say, when I first visited the island, I was focused mainly on the beaches. But it turns out that there’s so much more to this place than just sun and parties. Who Knew?
Ancient Necropolis:
First up, we’ve got Puig des Molins. Now, I’ll be honest, when my friend suggested visiting an ancient necropolis my first thought was “Who doesn’t want to see that, right!” (Sheesh!). But it turns out I was wrong! This place is fascinating. It’s a massive Phoenician cemetery with over 3,000 tombs. I remember walking through it, trying to wrap my head around the fact that people were buried here over 2,500 years ago.
Sant Antoni de Portmany:
Next on the list is Sant Antoni de Portmany. This town is like a perfect mix of old and new Ibiza. You’ve got these narrow, winding streets that feel like they’re straight out of a history book, but then you turn a corner and bam! There’s a trendy cafe or a modern art gallery. I spent a whole day just wandering around, getting lost in the little alleyways. Found this amazing little tapas bar tucked away in a corner – the best patatas bravas I’ve ever had!
Can Marçà Caves:
Last on the list is Can Marçà Caves. It’s a great escape from the summer heat. The first time I went, I was a little claustrophobic at the entrance, but once you get inside, it opens up into this massive cavern. The stalactites and stalagmites are impressive – some of them look like they’re from another planet.
They do this interesting light and music show inside the caves that are definitely worth seeing. Just a heads up: the steps can be a bit slippery, so wear good shoes. I learned that the hard way and did a pretty embarrassing slide down a few steps.

TIP: consider hiring a local guide. I did a guided tour of Dalt Vila once, and it changed my perspective entirely. The guide shared several little stories and details that I never would’ve discovered on my own. Plus, it’s a great way to support the local economy.

Travel Tips
The busiest tourist months in Ibiza are July and August, coinciding with school vacations in Northern Europe. As hoards of visitors flock to the Mediterranean coast, the area can become quite crowded. To help guarantee a smooth trip, plan ahead and secure your accommodations, rental cars, flights, and tours early.
Tip: For a more relaxed visit, consider traveling in May/June or September/October. The weather is still great, and you’ll avoid the peak season crowds.
Transportation
Now, let’s talk about getting around. Renting a car can be great for exploring the hidden corners of the island. I did this on my second trip and it was a game-changer. Found some amazing secluded beaches that way. Just be prepared for some, uh, interesting driving experiences on those narrow mountain roads.
If you’re not comfortable driving, don’t worry. There are buses that connect the major towns and beaches. They’re pretty reliable, but they can get packed in peak season. I once spent a bus ride squished between a guy with a massive backpack and a lady with a chihuahua in her purse. Makes for a good story, I guess?
Taxis are another option, but they can get pricey, especially late at night. I made the mistake of relying on taxis for a week-long trip once. Let’s just say my wallet wasn’t happy with me by the end of it.
Accommodations
The tourist infrastructure is well developed so there is no shortage of accommodations in the area. These range from luxurious beachfront resorts to budget-friendly youth hostels and guesthouses. However, as mentioned above, summer is the busiest time in the area so I recommend that you book well in advance. Your best bet is to check online for available places and book as soon as you can. Check out the link further below for places available right now.
Discover Ibiza: Local Cuisine
When in Ibiza, take the time to check out the different restaurants in the Old Town and try some of the local cuisine. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and a variety of dishes to taste. You’re on vacation, so why not, Right!?
Here are three dishes to try when visiting Ibiza:
- Tumbet: A traditional vegetable dish made with layers of fried potatoes, eggplant, and red bell peppers, topped with tomato sauce. It’s often served as a side dish or a vegetarian main course.
- Sobrassada: A cured sausage made from ground pork, paprika, and spices, known for its soft texture. It’s typically spread on bread or used as a flavorful ingredient in various dishes.
- Ensaimada: A sweet pastry made from a coiled dough, often dusted with powdered sugar. It’s a popular breakfast treat and can be filled with cream, chocolate, or pumpkin strands.

“Ir de Tapas”:Visit local tapas bars for a taste of Spain
As with most regions of Spain, the tradition of “Ir de Tapas” or Tapas Tour, is alive and well in Ibiza and involves visiting several bars and restaurants and sampling different foods and drinks. Being on an island, naturally, you will find a variety of seafood specialties to choose from.
Oh, and don’t forget to try hierbas ibicencas, the local herbal liqueur. It’s… an acquired taste, let’s say. Just don’t overdo it – that stuff is stronger than it tastes!
One last tip: don’t be afraid to venture away from the tourist areas for food. Some of the best meals I’ve had were in tiny restaurants in little villages.
