At the south end of Portocolom, you will find Cala Marçal beach. This small cove is a popular destination in the area that is perfect for families due to its calm waters and wide beach. It includes various amenities like washrooms, lifeguards, and a snack bar making it a great location to spend the whole day. Nearby coves around Portocolom are ideal for snorkeling, with clear waters and marine life to explore. These are also great places to paddleboard and kayak, with rentals available in various shops in Portocolom.

Portocolom is a picturesque fishing village whose natural harbor has played an important role in the town’s history. The harbor serves both as a hub for fishing and for various water activities. Along the harbor front are several restaurants and cafes where you can sit and enjoy the view. Fishing is still an ongoing commercial industry with fresh fish brought in daily. It should come as no surprise that seafood features quite prominently on all the local menus and is one of the major draws of the area.

From the harbor area, you can walk along the main promenade and cobble stoned streets and explore the various shops in the village. For a great view of the town and surrounding area, you can visit the town’s most visible landmark, the lighthouse at the harbor entrance.

Activities and Adventures Around Portocolom

First and foremost, Portocolom is a harbor town with a very large marina that brings in a large number of boats and pleasure craft. The harbor is ideally located for those just passing through on their way around the islands or those looking to just explore the local coastline. Boat rentals are available from some of the local shops where you can rent for a few hours or for a few days. You can also rent various sports equipment like kayaks and paddleboards and explore the local coastline from the water. 

Boat tours are another great way to experience the area, with tours often including stops at hidden coves. The tours vary in duration from under an hour to the whole day. Depending on availability some operators also include a snorkeling stop in their route. If you want to explore some of the local caves and see spectacular rock formations, you can join one of the Guided tours available in the area. These tours often include information about the local environment and its unique features.

Portocolom is right on the coast where you will find several hiking trails that wind their way along the coastline and to the various coves and hills in the area. These provide some spectacular views of the Mediterranean and surrounding landscape.

Accommodations in Portocolom

Portocolom offers boutique hotels, rental homes, villas, fincas, and budget-friendly options as well. Some accommodations feature sea views, some are on the waterfront, and others are within walking distance of the harbor and downtown area. Regardless of your preference, booking in advance is a must if you plan on coming during peak tourist season.

Practical Tips for Visiting Portocolom Mallorca

Summer is a great time to visit the area however it can be very busy. For a more relaxed and less hectic experience, I highly recommend coming in the off-season, either in May/June or September/October. The weather is still exceptionally warm and there are far fewer tourists. Transportation on the island is readily available whether you want to rent a car, take a taxi, or use public transportation or TIB, which is the island’s public transport company. They have routes that hit most of the major towns and most popular areas on the island. The currency used in Mallorca is the Euro and although many places have debit and credit machines, you might want to carry a little bit of cash just in case you run into a shop that does not accept cards. Learning a few greetings and expressions (“hola” and “gracias”) will go a long way towards making your trip more enjoyable and demonstrating some appreciation for the Spanish culture.
