IS CAMP DE MAR MALLORCA WORTH VISITING?

What Makes Camp de Mar Special?

Camp de Mar is located in the southwestern part of Mallorca, offering a peaceful coastal setting. The town is a little more on the exclusive side with its beach being a central attraction, with clear waters and a small island restaurant accessible by a bridge. The area is known for its calm atmosphere, making it a popular choice for families and those seeking relaxation. Unlike Palma or Magaluf, Camp de Mar has a slower pace and fewer crowds. It focuses more on nature and leisure rather than nightlife or bustling activities. It is a sought-after destination with expensive villas and homes owned by various celebrities like Claudia Schaefer, a former resident.

In Cap de Mar you can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, golfing, and water sports all within the surrounding areas. The town provides a quieter alternative to the more commercialized resorts on the island. It is also ideally situated if you are looking for a location within striking distance of Palma and the Tramuntana mountains.

Best Things to See and Do in Camp de Mar

Camp de Mar is directly on the Mediterranean and offers a large range of activities in town, on the water, and in the nearby hills and countryside. The beach, Platja Camp de Mar, is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. We visited there last year and we were quite taken by the small island in front of the beach with its iconic restaurant. You can reach the island using a small footbridge and the view from the restaurant was great and the food as well. Highly recommend!

There are also hiking trails winding their way throughout the area, along the coastline and nearby hills. These trails connect to other parts of the island, offering routes for walkers of different levels. In fact, we followed one of the trails from Camp de Mar to neighboring Peguera, where we spent a great afternoon during our trip. On the same trail, we walked by the ruins of an old pirate watch tower ( Torre de Cap Andritxol) overlooking the entire bay. These towers can be found everywhere along the Mallorcan coast, a reminder of a not-so-peaceful time.

Outdoor Adventures in and Around Camp de Mar

Camp de Mar is far away from the busier parts of the island and provides a great location for various outdoor activities. If you’re into golf, Golf de Andratx is a nearby 18-hole course that attracts players with its challenging layout and scenic location. It is considered one of the most difficult courses in the Mediterranean and it is listed as one of the top 100 golf courses in Spain.

Snorkeling in the Mediterranean, Camp de Mar Mallora, Spain

The beach is the main access point to the Mediterranean, with the remainder of the shoreline being rocky and in many places quite steep. This makes this area great for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddling. The bay is fairly large and sheltered so you have lots of coastline to explore with relatively calm waters during the summer.

If you are into hiking or cycling, you’ll love exploring the surrounding hills. There are plenty of trails of varying difficulty levels that wind their way through the surrounding forests where you can get some excellent workouts and see some spectacular views. Bike rentals are available right in Camp de Mar. The trails also connect to the surrounding towns making for great day trip opportunities with relatively little effort. During our visit, we rented bikes for the week and made this our main mode of transportation. The only exception is the one day we rented a car to make a road trip through the Tramuntana mountains (still working on that post).

Dining in Camp de Mar

It should come as no surprise that being right on the Mediterranean, fresh fish is readily available across the island and this includes Camp de Mar. The town offers a variety of dining options focused on seafood and Mediterranean cuisine using fresh ingredients from the region. Paella is a popular dish made with rice, seafood, and spices. Mallorcan specialties, such as tumbet and sobrasada, should also be on your “must-try” list if you are looking for traditional food. Many dining spots are located near the beach (such as the Restaurant Illeta, we mentioned earlier), providing views of the water while you enjoy your meal and watch the sunset.

Day Trip Ideas

Camp de Mar’s location puts it within striking distance of several day trip locations:

The Tramuntana Mountains

This mountain chain runs the entire western side of the island with elevations up to 1445m. It’s a favorite hiking destination for lots of people with various difficulty levels and lots of trails, the longest being 140km long. There is also a road that winds its way through the mountains with several beautiful villages and towns along the way, and exceptional scenery and views of the rugged western coast. On a recent trip, we rented a car and took a road trip through the mountains stopping along the way in Estellenc, Deia, and Port de Soller. An excellent experience.

Day Trip to Palma de Mallorca

Palma is only about 20km away and is a great day trip destination, and from Camp de Mar, easily accessible by bus. The main sites to see are in the Old Town, with the beautiful cathedral “La Seu”, Bellver castle and the Turkish baths. There are lots of shops and cafes and something to see around every corner. Definitely worth the trip!

Day Trip to Sa Dragona

From Camp de Mar head out to Sant Elm and take a ferry to the island of Sa Dragona. The entire island is a nature reserve where you can see various wildlife and flora native to the island. There are lots of trails on the island to explore making this a great place for a family outing.

Day Trip to Peguera

If you are looking for a small adventure that is close to Camp de Mar, then Peguera is a great destination only 2km away. Easy to walk to, with 3 separate sandy beaches, shops, restaurants, and cafes. A great place to spend the afternoon.

Wine Tours

For a different type of outing consider taking a wine tour of one of the many vineyards on the island. Mallorca has a thriving wine industry with many vineyards offering wine tours and wine tastings. The following is a list of a few vineyards that you may want to consider on your next trip:

  1. Bodega Terra IÓN (Andratx) – Located in the Tramuntana Mountains, this eco-friendly winery offers guided tours and tastings.
  2. Bodegas Bordoy (Llucmajor) – Known for its wine tours paired with local delicacies like jamón and queso
  3. Bodega Ramanyà (Santa Maria del Camí) – A family-run winery offering guided tours, wine tastings, and a tapas-style snack
  4. Son Juliana Winery – Offers a wine experience with tastings of their locally produced wines.
  5. Celler Tianna Negre – Also in Binissalem, offering a modern take on traditional Mallorcan wine-making.

Transport Options

When you arrive in Mallorca you will be landing at the international airport near the main city of Palma de Mallorca. Camp de Mar is accessible from the airport by rental car, taxi, or bus. Driving from the airport takes about 30 minutes, with clearly signed routes leading to your destination. Taxis are available at the airport as well and provide a direct option for reaching Camp de Mar. You can also reach Camp de Mar by using the island’s public transport system operated by TIB (Transports de les Iles Balears). You can follow the link above to TIB where you can find up-to-date schedules and routes.

The bus system is also a good choice if you want to reach other parts of the island, for day trips and excursions. Renting a car gives you a lot more flexibility for exploring various areas on the island at your own pace. Regardless of how you plan your trip, the combination of private and public transport options gives you a lot of choices.

Pros and Cons of Visiting Camp de Mar Mallorca

What are the pros and cons of visiting Camp de Mar?

Camp de Mar offers a calm atmosphere, making it a contrast to busier tourist destinations on the island. It is a place where you can unwind and enjoy a slower pace. When it comes to pros and cons, this will clearly depend on your expectations for your trip. If you are looking for a party destination, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a quiet location with a more quiet and laid back atmosphere then Camp de Mar is for you.

Pros:

Quiet and laidback location

Lots of trails for hiking and cycling

Beach right in town with restaurants nearby and amenities

Water sports like kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkeling

Family-friendly

Cons

Too quiet for those looking for a party destination

Only one beach in the village

Absence of activities geared to a younger party crowd

No marina

The area will likely not appeal to those seeking a vibrant nightlife or a wide range of activities for younger crowds. Families can appreciate the safe and peaceful environment for spending quality time together. Couples often find it appealing for its tranquil setting and opportunities for quiet moments. Solo travelers or those looking for a serene getaway may also find it a good match. The balance of relaxation and natural beauty makes it ideal for those prioritizing rest over entertainment.

Tips for a Memorable Visit

If you are looking for a beach vacation then the summer is the best time to visit. However, Mallorca is a popular Mediterranean destination and there are many tourists during the summer. So even though Camp de Mar is not in the middle of the action, compared to Magaluf or the main beach in Palma, there will still be lots of people, line ups and crowds. I recommend coming in the off-season, either in May/June or September/October. The weather is still very nice, but there will be far fewer people. This will make for a more relaxed and less hectic experience.

In terms of packing essentials, if you come in the summer, beachwear for sure. But make sure to bring some good walking shoes for sightseeing, day trips and for the trails. Also bring a hat and sunglasses. For the off-season, bring pants and a sweater or light jacket for the evenings.

For all of your activities, make sure to wear sunscreen and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. The euro is the currency used, so having cash or a card ready is important for transactions. Mallorca is part of Spain and while many locals speak English, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can be helpful and appreciated. Here are a few to help you get started: hola/hello, por favor/please and gracias/ thank you.

FINAL THOUGHTS: IS CAMP DE MAR MALLORCA WORTH VISITING?

Camp de Mar Mallorca is absolutely worth it if you are looking to unwind in a beautiful setting while still having access to outdoor adventures, beautiful scenery, and great food. Whether you’re relaxing on its idyllic beach, golfing on world-class courses, or savoring seafood by the water, this destination offers a unique mix of tranquility and experiences.
