What Is There To Discover in Cala Llombards?

Things to Know About Cala Llombards

Cala Llombards is on the southeast coast of Mallorca. The coast on this part of Mallorca is mostly rocky with only a handful of beach accesses to the Mediterranean, in tiny sandy coves or “calas”. Cala Llombards is not as famous as some of the other beaches on this side of the island, making it a little quieter and less busy during the summer months. It’s also less developed, with most of the surrounding landscape being mostly untouched by chain hotels and urban development.

Less busy however does not mean abandoned, so if you come during the high season you’ll want to go early to find parking and to get a good spot along the shore. The beach is made of soft white sand and the water is calm and crystal clear due to the protected location of the cove. Summer is great, but for the best experience, I recommend coming during the spring (May/June) or the fall (September/October). The weather is still exceptionally nice during these times but there are far fewer people.

How to Get to Cala Llombards

Cala Llombards is about 50km southeast of the Palma airport. You can reach Santanyi using the public bus system (TIB or Transport de les Illes Balears) and then take a taxi for the last 3km. If you are renting a car, then follow the main highway (MA19) to Santanyi and then follow the road signs to Cala Llombards. Just keep in mind that if you are planning on driving to the beach, make sure to get there early during the high season to be sure to get a parking spot.

What to Do at Cala Llombards

The main thing to do at Cala Llombards is to lie on the beach and just soak in the Mediterranean vibe. This beach looks like it’s straight out of a postcard for Mallorca Spain so you won’t be disappointed. The island waters are crystal clear so this is the ideal place to do some swimming and snorkeling. With the rocky coastline, there are lots of popular spots for jumping into the water as well. It’s also great for paddleboarding and kayaking, giving you great views of the island from the sea.

If you don’t have equipment, there are plenty of shops in the surrounding area where you can rent. There are also a lot of trails leading from the beach and heading along the coast or inland, so bring a good pair of shoes for walking. If you are staying locally, you may want to consider renting a bicycle which will help you easily get around the area and is a great way to explore the local towns, villages, and surrounding Mediterranean coastline.

Where to Stay Near Cala Llombards

Cala Llombards is within striking distance of several small villages and towns on the southeast coast of Mallorca, with Santanyi being the larger center in this case. The island has a well-developed tourist infrastructure, so you will find a large range of accommodations: from boutique hotels and guesthouses to rental properties such as fincas or beachside villas.

To help you find accommodation options and see availability in the area, I’ve included a link below. (For full disclosure, this is an affiliate link and if you end up booking accommodations through this link, I will earn a small commission. Please be assured that you will not be paying a higher price because of the commission, and the commission does help me to cover my costs). Keep in mind though, that the island as a whole is a popular tourist destination so you will want to book early especially if you decide to travel in the high season.

Tip: If you travel to Spain outside of the high season (for example May/June or Sept/Oct) you will find a wider selection of available options, often at reduced rates.

Tips for Visiting Cala Llombards

Before you head out to Cala Llombards make sure to bring the following: sunscreen, water shoes, walking shoes, water, sunglasses, and a hat. This is the Mediterranean after all, and the sun is extremely hot here so you will want to keep to the shade and stay hydrated. During the high season, there will be a kiosk at the beach where you can buy snacks and drinks, but it won’t hurt to bring along your own supplies. Whether you are snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding, make sure to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated.

When snorkeling you may want to consider wearing a t-shirt to protect your neck and back. Your back generally stays out of the water when snorkeling and your neck and back are directly exposed to the sun for long periods of time, something that many beginners don’t consider… until a few hours later when it’s too late. When swimming or participating in cliff activities, always check the water depth and look for clear entry points. Avoid jumping from cliffs without knowing the risks and ensure the area is safe for such activities.

Respect the environment, stay on marked trails and designated swimming areas, and make sure to take all of your trash with you when you leave the area and dispose of your garbage in appropriate containers.

Exploring Nearby Attractions

Not too far from Cala Llombards are several sites and attractions that you may want to check out when you are in the area. During the high season in Santanyi, there are two market days each week which will give you the opportunity to shop for local handcrafted goods and products, including meats, cheeses, wines, and baked goods. In addition to the markets, Santanyi is known for its several art galleries, showcasing local artistic talent.

Going northeast from Cala Llombards is the nearby beach of Cala Santanyi only 1km away (Click on the following link to learn more about Cala Santanyi). This beach is a little more developed than Cala Llombards and is definitely a beach to visit when in the area. For those looking for something a little more off the beaten path, then the beach of Calo des Moro is for you. This beach is only 1.5km from Cala Llombards and is virtually untouched by modern development.

It has no amenities and is a little hard to reach but for those that make the trek, they are rewarded with a beautiful Mallorcan beach cove in its natural state. Make sure to bring snacks, water suntan lotion, and anything else you think you will need for your beach day because you won’t find anything here for sale.

Why Cala Llombards Mallorca Should Be on Your Bucket List

I’ve traveled to Mallorca several times through the years and have visited multiple areas and one of my favorites is the eastern coastline with the island’s trademark calas. This includes Cala Llombards which has managed to stay undeveloped and maintain its original quiet charm while providing basic amenities to ensure a pleasurable visit (lifeguards, beach bar, WCs). Yes, it’s small and a little rough around the edges but that’s part of the charm! Surrounded by trees and rocky cliffs with a beautiful view of the Mediterranean, as far as places go where you can make memories with family and friends, it doesn’t get much better than this.
