Why Visit Cala Pi Beach?

What to Know Before Your Visit to Cala Pi Beach

On the south coast of Spain there is a 30km stretch of coastline made of high cliffs and a rocky shoreline with virtually no access to the Mediterranean Sea… except for one small beach called Cala Pi. It’s about a 40-minute drive by car from Palma airport but you can also reach it by taking public transport ( take bus nr 505 on the TIB – Transports de les Illes Balears) from Palma. There is parking at Cala Pi but it is limited so make sure to arrive early.

At the beach, you will find basic facilities such as restrooms and you will also find some restaurants in the nearby village. Whichever way you come, this beach is completely off the normal beaten path so bring everything you think you’ll need for this beach visit.

Activities to Enjoy at Cala Pi Beach

Cala Pi is a picturesque beach that is admittedly a little rough around the edges, which is part of what gives it its charm. The island cove is surrounded by cliffs and pine trees and has a small sandy beach. It also has a sandy bottom with a gradual slope making this a good place for families with kids. It’s about 400m from the beach to the opening to the sea and therefore provides a good sheltered area for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Several trails lead out from the beach where you can find exceptional views of the rocky coastline and the surrounding landscape. During the high season, this beach can be quite busy so make sure to come early. Summer is great but my recommendation is to go during the off-season in May/June or Sept/October when the crowds are mostly gone, but the weather is still very nice.

The Charm of Cala Pi Village

Torrent de Cala Pi is a tiny village located on the cliffs overlooking the cove. Here you will find several restaurants offering a variety of dining options including Mallorcan cuisine. There are also a few shops nearby where you can do a little shopping and pick up some groceries and some small souvenirs. I can’t emphasize enough that this is just a small hamlet so keep your expectations in check and you will be pleasantly surprised.

One of the landmarks to visit in this village is an old pirate watch tower, a reminder of a different time when pirates roamed the seas and regularly invaded the island. From the tower, you have a really nice view of the surrounding area and the Mediterranean Sea.

Nearby Attractions to Discover

About 10km east of Cala Pi is the beach of Es Trenc. If you feel like you need more room to spread your beach blanket, you may want to make your way here. Es Trenc is about 3km long with a small town roughly in the middle. This is a wide beach in a protected area with shallow waters, amenities nearby, and lots of room for everyone.
For the history buffs, there are 3 different Taloit sites within a 5km radius of Cala Pi: Poblat de s’Aguila d’en Quart, Poblat talaiotic de Capocorb Vell, and Conjunt prehistoric de Gomera Vell. Here you can see ancient ruins of the pre-Roman culture that lived on the island for about a thousand years.

Mallorca has an established wine industry with several vineyards within a short drive from Cala Pi. Some of these vineyards have organized wine tours which are a great way to learn about the local wines and a great opportunity to taste the different varieties made locally.

Travel Tips for Your Cala Pi Beach Adventure

When planning a beach visit in Cala Pi, make sure to bring sunscreen, water, a hat, and sunglasses. Especially during the summer, the sun on the island can be extremely strong and it is very easy to either get sunburned or dehydrated. Bring a good pair of walking shoes if you plan on hiking on the local trails. The landscape here is quite rugged and the corral rocks can be quite sharp in some spots, so a good pair of shoes is a must.

With the surrounding cliffs lined with pine trees, there is some beautiful scenery here, so make sure to bring a camera along. If you are driving, you may want to come early to be sure of a parking spot. If you’re planning on dining at one of the local restaurants, you may want to consider making a reservation in advance to be sure of a table.
