Why Visit Valldemossa Mallorca Spain?

1. Discover Valldemossa’s History

Between 902 AD and 1229 AD, Mallorca was occupied by the Moores and it was during this time that Valldemossa’s history starts. It began as part of a network of agricultural settlements but was transformed significantly after the Christian reconquest of Mallorca by King James I of Aragon. A key development was the construction of a royal palace, which later became known as the Charterhouse of Valldemossa. This site holds great historical importance for the village. The Charterhouse gained further recognition through the visit of Frederic Chopin and George Sand. Their stay during the winter of 1838-1839 brought international attention to Valldemossa. Chopin’s compositions and Sand’s writings during this period left a lasting cultural impact.

2. Top Attractions in Valldemossa

The main historical attraction for many visitors to Valldemossa is the Charterhouse whose most famous guests were Frederic Chopin and the French writer George Sand (Aurore Dudevant). One section of the Charterhouse has been converted into The Frederic Chopin Museum and cultural center highlighting the composer’s time in Valldemossa. The Charterhouse was originally built as a royal residence and then served as a monastery for the Carthusian monks until 1835.

3. Best Things to Do in Valldemossa

Valdemossa is located in a valley in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, making it a scenic place to visit with incredible views all around. It’s not a typical Mallorcan beach destination so the town offers a completely different experience than the coastal locations. Here you can wander the cobblestone streets and explore the local markets and boutiques in Valldemossa. You can find unique items and a variety of handcrafted goods that reflect local traditions.

The village also features authentic Mallorcan pastries like the “Coca de patata” which is a popular choice. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are numerous trails leading into the mountains, with various difficulty levels to suit every hiker. These paths are a great way to experience the area and enjoy the natural environment.

5. Where to Stay in Valldemossa Mallorca Spain

Valldemossa is a small town and although the tourist infrastructure is well developed, there are still only a limited amount of rooms available so be sure to book well in advance of your trip. Accommodations range from upscale hotels and guesthouses to rental properties such as fincas and villas. Alternatively, there are several other towns nearby that have various accommodations in various price ranges as well.

6. When to Visit Valldemossa

As mentioned earlier, Valldemossa is not a beach destination and in my opinion, the best time to visit is in the off-season, either in May/June or September/October. The weather is still quite exceptional and there are far fewer tourists on the island. That being said, fewer tourists does not mean “abandoned”, as we recently visited at the end of September and there were still plenty of people visiting the town. But with warm weather, beautiful clear skies, and mountains all around, who could blame them.

7. How to Get to Valldemossa Mallorca Spain

Getting to Valldemossa is quite easy as it is only about 12km north of Palma de Mallorca. From the airport, there are plenty of taxis available (the total distance is 25km to Valldemossa). And if you are renting a car, simply follow the signs to the main highway (Ma-19) heading into Palma (about 4km), then take the ring road around the north of the city (Ma-20) for 5km and then exit onto the Ma-1110 heading north which will take you to Valldemossa (12km).

You can also get to Valldemossa with the island bus system which services the airport, and most major towns and locations in Mallorca. Follow this link at TIB, Transports de les Iles Balears (the main bus operator on the island), to check schedules and routes for Valldemossa.

8. Day Trips and Nearby Attractions

Valldemossa is a good starting point for numerous day trips to nearby areas. Here are a few suggestions of places to consider while staying in Valldemossa:

Visit the nearby towns of Soller and Port de Soller which offer a combination of stunning landscapes, charming architecture, and authentic Mallorcan culture. This charming village is renowned for its bohemian spirit, with cobblestone streets, stone houses, and world-famous celebrities (like local home owners, Michael Douglas and Andrew Lloyd Weber to name a few). 9. Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit

When planning your trip, consider bringing a comfortable pair of walking shoes for both wandering around town and walking the trails. The weather in Mallorca is nice all year round but there are seasonal variations. Make sure to consider weather conditions when packing for your trip. Summers are hot, so pack light clothing and beachwear. During the shoulder seasons (fall and spring), bring long pants and an additional sweater or jacket for cool nights. During the winter months, bring warmer clothing and wet weather gear in case it rains.

For all of your activities, make sure to bring sunscreen to protect against the sun and water to stay hydrated.

Valldemossa Mallorca is a popular tourist destination, so for any sightseeing make sure to take into consideration that there will likely be a lot of other people sightseeing as well. Consider visiting lesser-known places where there will be fewer people and the pace will be less hectic.  Or head out early to try and beat the crowds. I found that planning my visits for the mornings and leaving the afternoons for “beach” time seemed to work out quite well.
