WHAT ARE THE TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN ALMERIA?

Discover Almeria’s Rich History

Explore the Alcazaba Fortress

The Alcazaba Fortress is one of the largest Muslim fortresses built in Spain. It was built in the 10th century and served as a defensive stronghold against Christian kingdoms. It later played a crucial role in the Reconquista. The fortress is made up of 3 distinct levels of fortification: the first enclosure is the military zone with barracks and cisterns, the second enclosure contains the palace and gardens, and the third enclosure, which includes a castle, was built by the Catholic Monarchs.

This fortress remains in good condition and from its position you get a spectacular view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. It is open to the public year-round with specific visiting hours (Note: there is an entrance fee to view the fortress and the on-site museum). My advice is to wear good comfortable shoes and come either early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Almeria Cathedral

This structure was built as a combination fortress-cathedral in the 16th century to serve a dual purpose as a place of worship and a defensive structure against pirate attacks. The cathedral is open to visitors throughout the year with specific hours for tours (Note: tours are available in multiple languages). There is an entrance fee and audio guides are also offered. Make sure to dress modestly if you decide to visit as this is a place of worship. Be sure to visit the bell tower from which you have stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean.

Museum

Almeria has a rich history and to capture this, a museum was established in the 1930’s to showcase various important time periods in its past. There are exhibits focusing on Almeria’s prehistoric past, its Roman era, Islamic era, and Christian era. The Museum is open year-round with free admission (or a nominal fee depending on current exhibitions).

Historical Walks

This is a great way to see and appreciate the city and understand its history. Guided tours will help point out Moorish and Christian architectural styles, and point out interesting facts about the Old Town and various ruins from the Roman, Islamic, and Christian periods. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and book your tours well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. Consider taking an evening tour to avoid the daytime heat.

The peak tourist season in Almeria and the surrounding area is during July and August when most regions of Northern Europe have their school breaks. With everybody heading to the Mediterranean coast at the same time, it does get busy so be prepared, plan ahead, and book accommodations, rental cars, plane tickets, and tours well in advance.

Tip: If you are looking for a less hectic experience, you might want to consider traveling in May/June or in Sept/October. The weather is still exceptionally nice and you can escape the large crowds.

  • Driving: You can reach this region by using the A-7 highway that runs through the region going east towards Murcia and west towards Malaga, or the A92 which heads north-west towards Granada and Seville.
  • Train: You can reach Almeria from Madrid by train in about 6 hours.

Accommodations

The tourist infrastructure is well developed so there is no shortage of accommodations in the area. These range from luxurious beachfront resorts to budget-friendly youth hostels and guesthouses.
