What is There To Discover near Santanyi Mallorca?

Getting to Santanyi Mallorca

Like most people visiting Mallorca, Spain, you’ll come through the Palma airport. Getting to Santanyi from the airport is straightforward, with Santanyi only being 40km away. If you are renting a car, when leaving the airport just follow the signs to get on the main highway, MA19 heading southeast. Then simply stay on this highway for the next 40 km. It gets a little busy at km 30 where you drive through the town of Campos but otherwise, it’s a straight run to Santanyi.

You can also reach Santanyi by bus, using the public transport system in Mallorca which is called “Transport de les Illes Balears” or TIB (The following link will take you to bus routes and schedules). The bus system will take you to most major towns on the island including Santanyi, with several daily routes. You can check the schedule on their website to get the most up-to-date times, as the schedule is seasonal.

Exploring the Santanyi Weekly Market

A great way to get a feel of the local culture is by visiting the local farmer’s markets. In Santanyi, these are held during the high season on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Here you will find a variety of locally produced goods such as handcrafted leather goods, pottery, clothes, meats, cheese, and other delicacies. You will also find various stands selling snacks such as baked goods, pastries, and other treats (Tip: go for the local pastries, you won’t be disappointed!). Make sure to bring cash because not all vendors will have debit or credit card machines. Remember to take your time and enjoy the experience.

Top Attractions in Santanyi Mallorca

Around Santanyi there are various sites that you should visit during your stay. For example, scattered throughout the island are Talaiot megalithic structures left behind by the pre-Roman inhabitants of the Balearic Islands. One of the major Talaiot sites in the area is about  25km west of Santanyi, at Talaiot Capcorp Vell.
If you’re an art lover, you can also visit one of several art galleries in town, and see works from local artists. There are also exhibitions throughout the year where you can also see local artwork.
At the edge of the town of Cala Figuera is an old coastal tower overlooking the Mediterranean. The tower is called “Torre den Beu” and is a remnant of the network of pirate watch towers built in the 16th century to protect against pirate attacks on the island. It’s a nice walk out to the tower and its location provides a great view of the sea. There are a lot of things to see in Santanyi so you may want to consider taking a guided tour where you can get more detailed information, stories, and local insight, a great way to learn more about this Mediterranean island.

Beaches Near Santanyi Mallorca

With a good degree of certainty, you are not just visiting Mallorca to see ancient ruins. Like the majority of visitors to the island, you’re most likely here for the beaches. And you won’t be disappointed. Some of the nicest beaches on the island are right nearby. At 2.5km from Santanyi is one of my favorites, Cala Santanyi. This beach features often on many pictures of Mallorca and for good reason. With soft golden sand, and crystal clear waters, surrounded by rocky cliffs and green vegetation, this beach is a perfect representation of a “traditional” Mallorcan beach.

A kilometer further along the coast, and in the same league, is Cala Llombards. Both Cala Llombards and Cala Santanyi are great for snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and most importantly, just lying in the sun.

For those looking for something a little more off of the beaten path, you can visit Cala Des Moro. It’s a little more work to make it out to this beach (it helps if you have a rental car) but it’s absolutely worth it. This is the beach postcards dream of! It has no amenities so make sure to bring everything with you including drinks and snacks.

Not too far from Cala des Moro is Cala s’Almonia which is a beautiful bay with a rocky shoreline and crystal clear waters. There isn’t a beach here, but that doesn’t stop hundreds of people from gathering here for a swim in the summertime. Make sure you bring some good shoes for the rugged terrain.

For a completely different style of Mallorcan beach, a short drive away is Platja des Trenc, one of the largest beaches on Mallorca which is located on a nature reserve, helping to maintain its natural condition. This beach has crystal clear waters, a 3km long wide sandy beach that drops off slowly into the sea and a Caribean feel to it. There are towns at either end of the beach so there are plenty of amenities available to visitors

Gastronomy in and Around Santanyi

There are numerous cafes and restaurants in Santanyi and the surrounding towns. This is an island so you will find that seafood features quite high on most menus, with most places serving fresh catch of the day. In addition to this, many restaurants also specialize in Mallorcan cuisine, using local spices and ingredients. Many of the restaurants will serve specialties like sobrasada, which is a seasoned cured sausage, and ensaimada, a local pastry (my favorite). You can either choose to eat in town or at one of the villages along the coast

(Tip: whichever you decide, be sure to make reservations in advance to avoid disappointment. Especially during the high season!).

Wine Tours

If you’re looking for a great activity during your stay, you can’t go wrong with a wine tour at one of the many vineyards on the island. The wine tours give you an opportunity to taste locally produced wine and get to know more about the island’s traditions and cultures. And its fun! Below is a short list of vineyards relatively close to Santanyi with their contact information. My advice is to contact them directly to make reservations and ask about transportation options. There are of course more vineyards if you are willing to travel a little further, but this list should get you started.

Outdoor Activities and Day Trips

A great way to see Santanyi and the surrounding area is by walking or cycling. There are countless trails through the countryside and on the coast for you to choose from and several nearby villages that you can visit along the way such as Es Llombards, Cala Figuera, and Ses Salines. Bike rentals are available at several shops in town, with various rates: hourly, daily, and weekly. They also have electric bikes if you want a more relaxed outing. If you opt for walking, just make sure to have good sturdy shoes as some of the trails, especially along the coast, can be quite rocky and rough.

Regardless of how you choose to get around, remember to bring suntan lotion, water, a hat, and just in case, bring a bathing suit and towel if you decide to take a dip. After all, this is the Mediterranean and the sun is strong here. It can be overwhelming for some if you are not used to it, and if you have to cool off, what better way than jumping into the sea.

Where to Stay in Santanyi Mallorca

Santanyi is a popular destination so there is a large selection of accommodations to choose from such as small boutique hotels, vacation homes, or fincas. The town is small so regardless of where you stay in town, you will be within walking distance of everything. If you are looking for more solitude then the fincas out in the countryside are a great option. Vacation homes along the coast are also an option if you are interested in staying close to the sea. Regardless of what you prefer, book well in advance.

(Full disclosure, this is an affiliate link and if you end up booking something on this site, I will make a small commission. This commission however will not add to the price you would otherwise have paid if you booked directly with the vendor and it would certainly help offset my expenses.)

Best Time to Visit

Summer is by far the best time of year for visiting if you are mainly interested in a beach vacation. However, the high season is extremely busy and if you are flexible in when you can take your holidays, you may want to consider traveling in May/June or in September/October. The weather is still exceptionally nice but there will be considerably fewer people. This means shorter lineups at many venues, less crowded tours, fewer people at restaurants and hotels, cheaper airfare, and generally lower prices on most things. Just something to consider when planning your trip.
