1. Why Choose the Ibiza Ferry?

The Ibiza ferry offers a unique way to travel compared to flying. It’s like taking a mini cruise with the island being your final destination. What better way to start your Mediterranean holiday? As a bonus this allows you to take your own vehicle along, making it easier to get around the island when you arrive.

The ferry also lets you take a lot more luggage and sporting equipment, which can be convenient for longer stays and for doing your favorite sport. Unlike flights, the ferry provides a slower pace, giving you time to relax during the trip to the island and giving you a great way to combine travel with leisure. If you’re looking for a different way to start off your trip to Ibiza, the ferry presents a practical and enjoyable option.

2. Types of Ibiza Ferries and What to Expect

Ibiza ferries come in two main types: fast ferries and standard ferries. Fast ferries are about prioritizing shorter travel times, while standard ferries offer a longer journey. Of course, the length of the journey will depend on your departure point. Onboard, you’ll find various seating arrangements, dining options, and entertainment.

Different operators manage routes to Ibiza, with departures from cities like Barcelona, Valencia, and Denia. Each operator provides specific schedules and services, catering to different preferences. Travelers can choose based on their priorities, such as speed or onboard offerings.

3. Ferry Costs

Obviously, there is a cost involved in taking the ferry but how much is it?
I’ve put together a table showing price ranges for individual passengers and a table showing price ranges for a passenger vehicle, to give an idea of the costs that are involved. The actual final cost will clearly depend on where you plan on leaving from, when you plan on traveling, and when you buy your tickets. 

Just as an example, I ran some numbers based on a trip I plan on taking this spring: I will be staying a few days in Alicante, and from there, I plan on driving up the coast before taking a ferry to Ibiza.  After looking at various options, I decided to take a ferry from Valencia as it proved to be cheaper on the dates I am traveling.

If I wanted to save time, I could have left from Denia but then it was more expensive. My recommendation here is to look at your own situation and compare the different companies and routes carefully and decide what is best for you.

4. Is it more expensive to take a ferry or fly?

If you are wondering if it makes more sense to take a ferry than to fly, you’re not alone. For my planned trip I mentioned above, it is actually cheaper to fly than to take a ferry, with a price difference of about 30% which is quite high. I looked at multiple factors in making my calculation, like departure point, number of passengers (I calculated based on two ), using your own car vs a rental car, how many holidays you have, etc….

Despite the increased cost in my case, I put more value on bringing more luggage and my kite surfer, so the extra cost is worth it in this instance. How much it will cost for you will depend entirely on your own circumstances so it is definitely worth comparing the various websites for ferry operators and airlines to see what makes more sense for you. 

Ferry ticket prices vary based on the type of ferry, route, season, and if you’re traveling by vehicle. Unlike flying, however, there are often discounts available for groups and families. 

Flights to Ibiza also vary in cost depending on the airline, time of booking, and travel season. In some cases, flights are sometimes cheaper for solo travelers, especially with budget airlines.

Ferries, however, can be more cost-effective for families or groups when factoring in vehicle transport and luggage allowances. The choice between ferry and flight often depends on the total cost, including additional fees like baggage or parking. Comparing both options will help decide which better suits your budget and travel needs.

5. Insider Tips for a Great Ibiza Ferry Experience

Assuming you have decided to take a ferry, the next thing to consider is booking your tickets. Regardless of when you plan on traveling, my advice is to book well in advance. This is especially true if you plan on traveling during the high season in July and August.

Booking early is also a good way to secure better prices. The longer you wait, the more expensive it will become. 

For the ferry crossing, you may want to pack essentials like snacks, water, and entertainment to make your trip more comfortable and to reduce costs. If the weather during the crossing is nice and you can stay outside make sure to wear sunscreen. You don’t want to start your trip with a nasty sunburn. 

Make sure to leave yourself lots of time for the trip and arrive at the port early. 
Once the ferry leaves port, take the time to explore what the ferry has to offer, check out the various lounges, visit the concession stand and if possible go outside.

For me, the time on the ferry is like a mini cruise and I treat it that way to make the most of the experience. If after all of this, you decide that a ferry is not for you, then of course, flying is always an option.
